LOCHABER VERSUS OBAN
The clash on Sunday 21st August between the two clubs produced some excellent squash with fine individual performances, none more so than Murdo Murray playing his first competitive match for Lochaber. His game of grit and determination was too much for Obans, Paul Murphy who was technically superior but still lost 2-0.
The game of the day saw the respective number one players Bruce Love and Andy Phillips lock horns. Andy came out of the blocks firing on all cylinders, showing patience in the numerous long rallies and deservedly winning the first game 9-3.
Whether it was confidence or the fact that he did not relish the prospect of another long series of long energy sapping rallies, Andy changed his tactics in the second game becoming more attack minded and trying for early winning shots, often at inappropriate times which Bruce started to pick-off and won 9-1.
The third and deciding game saw Andy try to tighten his shots but this lead to mistakes, particularly with his drops to the front of the court and Bruce remained in control to win 9-3 and the match 2-1.
Other results were as follows;
LOCHABER OBAN
Bruce Love 2 1 Andy Phillips
Andrew Macmaster 0 2 Colin Macniven
Rah Douglas 0 2 Allan Moore
Murdo Murray 2 0 Paul Murphy
Iain Black 2 0 Fraser Inglis
Gary Davidson 2 1 Eric Maclean
Giving Lochaber a 4-2 victory to Lochaber, an excellent result as they were without injured no. 2 Warren Cameron and had been beaten 5-1 at Oban earlier this year in a bounce game.
The Oban team was however too strong for the Lochaber B team comprising of Neil Wordsall, Nick Hadwen, Colin Campbell, Tommy Disher, Shona Gillies, Stevie Macleod and Alan Love winning 5-1.
The lone victor was 15-year-old Alan Love who beat a player that had previously beaten him in Oban.
The Lochaber A versus Lochaber B fixture ran true to form apart from the ladies number one Shona Gillies having an excellent 2-1 victory over Gary Davidson.
This is hopefully a start of things to come where we can invite teams to Lochaber and put on a good day for all or travel to other venues to play new teams for a new experience.
A special thanks must go to the Nevis Bank who provided soup and sandwiches for everyone who went back after the days events.
